I’m a big fan of Giles cartoons. Giles was the Express cartoonist for nearly fifty years and a great cartoonist of the common man. He poked fun at politicians, judges, traffic wardens, garage owners, seaside landladies, shop keepers, and the self-important and ridiculous wherever they were to be found, but he had a genius for the mundane, and sheds featured strongly in his cartoons. This is one of my favourites. It’s the cover illustration of the Series 31 annual and for me is the perfect home workshop. I hope you like it. The cartoons are copyright Daily Express.

He reminds me a little of that other classic, Heath Robinson and Norman Thelwell’s ponys.
I have a Norman Thelwell’ book with a shed in, will have to dig it out, great stuff
Hi Paul, yeah, there was often a lot going on, mainly with naughty children. Did you know he lived and worked in Ipswich?
Simon, yes I was aware of his Ipswich connection. There is a fine statue close to the Corn Exchange. Ans a few years back there was a great exhibition of his work at Christchurch Mansion.
Giles was a God amongst cartoonist. I'm always amused by the 'supporting cast' in them. Often little lads doing something naughty in the background. Star of the show had to be Grandma!
